There has been outrage after it was revealed that tomorrow evening a documentary is to be shown on British television showing the moment a man ends his life in an assisted suicide.
A 59-year-old man Craig Ewert, suffering from motor neurone disease along with his wife of 37-years Mary, are filmed in a Swiss euthanasia clinic until his life ends.
The TV Watchdogs, pro-life campaigners and anti-euthanasia protesters are furious over the decision to allow the documentary to be broadcast.
I’m in two minds about this one! Firstly, I don’t know if it’s right to film such a personal thing but on the other hand I want to watch it to make my own mind-up.
The man has described his body as a ‘living tomb’ and was told in 2006 that he would have between two-five years to live.
He is totally dependent on his wife, he has a ventilator and is losing the ability to swallow, would you want to live like that?
He is seen in the documentary biting down on a timer, which switches off his ventilator. He then drinks a lethal cocktail of drugs through a straw and dies forty-five minutes later, no more pain.
I agree, suicide is such a selfish act, but what this man is doing is more selfless. What is the point in delaying the inevitable, watching the suffering of the people around him as his body deteriorates further, when he can’t express the pain that he is feeling. It would be the right decision for me.
