Mum Shops Her Son To Police

Joy Ryder - Tuesday 08.07.08, 15:10pm

A Hampshire mother, Hiliary Kellett, shopped her son to the police because she believed he had beaten a man and left him for dead.

Liam Edwards, 27, from Bursledon, Southampton, and his friend Adam Stebbing, 32, from North Front, Southampton, attacked Scott Spiers, 34, in Freemantle Lake Park in Southampton on December 22nd 2007.

The pair had gone to the park hoping to get some drugs.  They met Mr Spiers and asked if he would like to pool his money with theirs so the drugs would be cheaper.

Mr Spiers, however, refused and Edwards and Stebbing set upon him, kicking him to the ground and stamping on his head at least 12 times before abandoning him to die.

The Prosecutor, Christopher Parker said,

“For some reason these two young men set upon Scott Spiers.  They set upon him in a joint attack.  They inflicted upon him a savage beating.

It concluded with their stamping on his head.  We say in carrying out that assault, they intended to kill Scott Speirs.  Together they left Mr Speirs lying on the ground bleeding from his head obviously unconscious.”

The pair allegedly went on to attack another man, John Ball, later the same evening in Northam before returning to Freemantle Park to search for a mobile phone dropped during the attack on Mr Speirs.

Mr Speirs was still lying on the ground where they had left him but they did nothing to help him.  It was a dog walker that finally found the victim a few hours later, and called an ambulance.

Mr Parker added,

“It’s clear they left him to die, if effect on a December night, not once but twice.”

Both thugs denied charges of attempted murder and actual bodily harm.  Stebbing also denied a further charge of grievous bodily harm with intent.

Mrs Kellet, mother of Edwards, told the court she was violently sick at the thought that her “own flesh and blood” could have been responsible for the terrible injuries suffered by Scott Speirs.

Mrs Kellet, told the jury that she had driven the defendants to the park and waited for them for half-an-hour, while they were inside and then drove them away without realising what had happened.

When she was asked to describe their behaviour when they returned from the park, she said they were “flustered” and Stebbing was “panicky” after realising his phone was missing.  She said ‘Adam said, “Let’s just get out of hear quick.”

Mrs Kellet heard about the attack the next day on the radio when the defendants were in the car.  She said ‘Liam said. “That must be the bloke from the other night” and Adam told him to “Shut up” and not to talk in front of me’.

When asked why she had given her son’s name to the police she said, “Because I heard that this poor lad had been left for dead on the radio and to know that my own flesh and blood could do something like that, something so sick…”

She added, “Liam said he had to get rid of his trainers - that he was going to burn his trainers.  He said if they any DNA he was up on an attempted murder charge.”

Scott Spiers remains in a coma in hospital, the trial continues.

At least Mrs Kellett had the decency to confess to what her thug of a son and his friend had done to the poor victim.  What an awful situation to be in, at the end of the day you do everything you can to protect your children, but when you have to face up to one of your family carrying out such an evil crime, there is only one thing to do, good on her.  As for them, let them rot!

” An awful situation to be in” ? a mother who has to decide or not to confess or not to what her son has done is sad but whatever happens to that son he is still alive at the end of the day to forget and go ahead in life.. right or wrong, yet another family and another mother who day in day out sits and waits not knowing whether that son in front of her lying in a coma for more than six months now will ever wake up - that is an awful situation to be in!!

Our thoughts should be with Scott who is still fighting for his life day after day six months later, and of course with his 8 year old son who doesn’t understand why daddy doesn’t wake up- heartbreaking.

Why did she drive these thugs to a park at night in the first place?

Liam (and I’m not justifiying him at all), is like he is because of his mother, who was in prison herself once for being involved with a minor.

He is a product of his upbringing and she bears a huge amount of responsibility

Hilary is no angel at all, one of vilest, self centered people who was one of the worst mothers you could imagine, hence social services being involved from the very beginning with her kids. Liam didn’t have a hope in hell with the upbrining he had - not that this excuses in any way his vile crimes.
