Prisoners Day Out

Joy Ryder - Monday 25.02.08, 17:27pm

I have just been reading a news report about a light aircraft that crash landed into a pensioners back garden.  I know that most people have probably read similar stories before but the thing that really sticks out with this one is that it had a prisoner on-board for a day out!

The light aircraft crashed into the old couples garden in Folkestone, Kent shortly after take-off from Rochester airport, but both the pilot and the convict emerged from the wreckage.

The convict, who has not yet been named was in prison for importing drugs and is serving his time at Blantyre House Prison in Goudhurst.  He had been let out of the category C prison on day release, which is where a 12 hour formal leave of absence is granted to allow inmates to maintain ties with their families.  Why, they are in there for punishment, why should they get perks and who pays for them!

This incident comes after the prison’s deputy government, Kim Coulstock, was suspended for alleged irregularities concerning prisoner movements where internal investigations are continuing.

Why bother sending anybody to prison, whatever sentence they get is halved, life certainly does not mean life, they are allowed day release usually at the tax payers expense, their cells are equipped with everything they could wish for.  Prisons are no longer places to be afraid of going they are now seen as a home from home or better in most cases.  Can anyone see the problem here or is it just me?
