Further to our recent post regarding the electronic cigarette, we have been made aware that the product has not been welcomed with open arms in all parts of the world.
In California for instance, which led the way in the USA for banning smoking in public places back in the early nineties, a similar ban on electronic cigarettes was passed by the California Senate in September last year.
It turns out that the ban has not in fact been enforced however, as California Governor Arnie Schwarzenegger refused to sign the bill making it law.
Schwarzenegger declined to sign the document which called for a complete ban on the product in the State, saying that while he supports the sale of tobacco products to children, including e cigarettes, adults have the freedom to make their own choices.
“I am returning Senate Bill 400 without my signature. While I support restricting access of electronic cigarettes to children under the age of 18, I cannot sign a measure that also declares them a federally regulated drug when the matter is currently being decided through pending litigation. Items defined as “tobacco products” are legal for anyone over the age of 18. If adults want to purchase and consume these products with an understanding of the associated health risks, they should be able to do so unless and until federal law changes the legal status of these tobacco products. For this reason, I am unable to sign this bill. Sincerely, Arnold Schwarzenegger”
