Brent Martin, 23 years old, was kicked to death over a £5 bet by three thugs in August 2007. The thugs who attacked Mr. Martin and left him in a pool of blood have been sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court.
William Hughes, 22, Marcus Miller,16, both admitted to the murder but Stephen Bonallie, 17, denied the charges.
The three thugs, all trained boxers from Sunderland, repeatedly punched, kicked, stamped-on and head-butted the victim over a £5 to see who could knock him out first.
Mr Martin who had learning difficulties was chased around the Sunderland housing estate by the drunken yobs who he considered to be his friends. Mr Martin had been released three months earlier from a psychiatric hospital where he had been staying due to his learning disabilities. The thugs left their victim stripped of his trousers and pants, dying next to a parked car whilst they posed for photographs. He later died in hospital from his injuries.
A post-mortem examination revealed that Mr Martin died from a massive head injury and had suffered at least 18 separate blows to the head and neck.
The Judge, John Milford, described the attack as a “sadistic conduct on an extremely vulnerable victim”.
Hughes, the ring leader, must serve at least 22 years, Bonallie must serve at least 18 years and Miller must serve at least 15 years. The Judge went onto say “I would hope the minimum terms imposed upon young offenders are sufficiently long to spell out to young people the consequences of committing murder. If I am wrong, then perhaps the 12-year starting point for those under 18 needs to be looked at again by Parliament when the murder is, as in this case particularly serious.”
Once again, alcohol was the plea by Miller’s defence lawyer, Ben Nolan QC. He blamed the availability of cheap alcohol, and said that a litre bottle of Vodka could be purchased from as little as £6 in Sunderland.
At last we are starting to see some better sentencing in terms of years but they will still be living a cushy life in prison. Send them out to war zones, let them sweep for mines etc, they should not be allowed to live normal lives, they wouldn’t be missed, they are just pure evil and if it wasn’t alcohol it would be something else they were taking that would be blamed.
