Buzzin Disgrace

Hotel Manager, Kiera Coultas, 25 years old, who killed a cyclist whilst speeding and texting her estranged husband was jailed for four years today at Southampton Crown Court.

Jordan Wickington, 19 years old from Netley, Southampton was riding his bike at 7am on February 7th 2007. He had stopped at a red light momentarily and then rode throught it whilst it was still on red but Coultas had not seen him as she was answering a text on her mobile phone at the time as well as driving at 45mph in a 30mph zone.

Jordan, who unfortunately was not wearing a cycle helmet, was hit by Coultas and suffered serious head injuries and later died in Southampton General Hospital.

Coultas, from Hythe, Southampton already had three previous convictions for speeding, two of which were on the road leading to the same junction where the accident occurred.

Coultas, admitted to speeding but denied dangerous driving, she was found guilty by a jury.

The Judge, Jeremy Burford QC sentenced her to four years in jail and she was banned from driving for five years. He said “The serious part of your conduct was that you were sending a text message on your mobile phone having just received one.  It occurred at precisely the worst time because you failed to see the cyclist who was crossing the road having gone through the red light and travelling as you were at 45mph you hit him and he suffered injuries from which he later died.”

Jordan’s step-brother, Dan Hickman said “We are satisfied that this will hopefully be a deterrent for others. There are no winners in a case like this”.

Jordan made a serious error of judgement that day by ignoring the red light but this woman was again speeding and using her mobile phone whilst doing so, what does she actually class as dangerous driving!

She will in fact only serve part of that time, probably a couple of years and when will her driving ban start from the day she is released from prison, no it will start from now so again she will have halved her ban, ridiculous.

She should be banned from driving for life, she has previous convictions that have made absolutely no difference to the way she drives, nobody is safe whilst she is on the road. I think she got off very lightly, she deserved to be sent to jail but it should have been for much longer, she took another life through her carelessness.
