Buzzin Disgrace

This week 15-year-old Dean Ingram, who has been named by order of the judge Charles Wide was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months for manslaughter after he dropped a 44lb breeze block off of a bridge which killed a lorry driver.

On July 27th 2007, Ingram and his two friends had stolen bicycles and rode to the the Doddington Road bridge which is over the A45 dual carriageway in Northamptonshire at about 3.30am. 

One of the friends, Jamie Winter, also 15-years-old, had urinated over the bridge and then threw a breeze block onto the hard shoulder.  Ingram was annoyed at his friend for not aiming it at the road and that’s when Winter got another breeze block which Ingram took control of and let it fall the moment that 68 year-old Laurence McCourt was driving his truck underneath.

The breeze block smashed through the windscreen of Mr McCourt’s truck and hit him in the chest killing him almost instantly whilst his 40ft truck careered on for another half-a-mile eventually stopping against a crash barrier.

The boys left the bridge about 8am and met up with a group of girls who Ingram was trying to impress by telling them that he had murdered a lorry driver and laughing about it.

Ingram arrived at the court shouting and giving obscene gestures whilst smoking, the product of a broken home given in his defence.  Apparently he has been left unsupervised to roam the streets and was described as a feral yob.

Defending Ingram, Fergus Gow, said that he did not intend for this to happen he intended to drop it onto the back of a trailer to see it bounce off and concluded that Ingram was “bitterly remorseful”.

Winter received a 12-month detention and training order after admitting causing danger to road users  The third boy, only admitted to spitting off the bridge but later told the truth about what had happened and did not face any charges.

One of Mr. McCourt’s friends said “He was a real decent guy .  What those kids did to him was terrible.  I’ve never been a hang ’em and flog ’em kind of person but things like this are just unforgivable”.

This is happening everyday on our streets, and something needs to be done.  These kids should not be roaming the streets, there should be curfews for these yobs, the police know who they are but are powerless to act. Bring back National Service and corporal punishment and get the skum off the streets.
